Autism Types

Several autism types have been defined along the spectrum. These autism types generally differ in the severity of the symptoms, amount of disability and also in the combinations of autistic impairments with other disabilities. The various autism types with brief accounts are as follows:

Classic Autism Disorder (also known as Kanner’s Syndrome)

People with this autism type exhibit the following symptoms:

  • Lack of affect or emotional contact with others
  • A great wish for sameness in daily routines
  • Some or a greater degree of abnormality of speech
  • Great deal of fascination with manipulating objects
  • Strong visuo-spatial skills, but major learning difficulties in other areas
  • Alertness and intelligence in appearance

Asperger’s Syndrome

Asperger’s Syndrome is another autism type, which is considered milder form of autism. It is characterized by:

  • Qualitative impairment in social interaction
  • Stereotyped and restricted patterns of behavior, activities and interests
  • Delay in cognitive development though not clinically significant
  • General delay in language.
  • Intense preoccupation with a narrow subject
  • Motor clumsiness

Rett Syndrome

This autism type usually affects girls and is generally marked by the following:

    • Poor head growth.
    • Poor verbal and social skills.
    • Repetitive hand movements such as hand-wringing,
    • Excessive hand-washing.
    • Excessive clapping
    • Some degree of mental retardation
