Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), also called Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDDs), cause severe and pervasive impairment in thinking, feeling, language, and the ability to relate to others. Autism Spectrum Disorders are usually first diagnosed in early childhood and range from a severe form, which is known as autistic disorder, through pervasive development disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), to a much milder form, called Asperger syndrome. They also include two rare forms of autistic disorders, i.e. Rett syndrome and childhood disintegrative disorder.
People with Autism Spectrum Disorders generally have problems with social, emotional, and communication skills. They show repetition of certain behaviors and resistance to change their daily activities. Many people with Autism Spectrum Disorders also have different ways of reacting to things, learning or paying attention. Autism Spectrum Disorders generally begin during early childhood and may last throughout a person's life.
There is no one or best treatment package for all children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Right now, the main treatment for Autism Spectrum Disorders is intensive structured teaching of skills, which is often called behavioral intervention. It is very important to start this intervention as early as possible in order to help your child reach his or her full potential. Rule of thumb is to act early. More important, decisions about the required treatment, or combination of treatments, should be made by the parents, definitely with the assistance of a trusted expert physician and diagnostic team.
